President & Laboratory Director Search

In August, Dr. George Korch announced his retirement after more than three years as the Laboratory Director of the National Biodefense Analysis and Countermeasures Center (NBACC) and President of Battelle National Biodefense Institute (BNBI), the contractor responsible for laboratory management and operations.

To identify a successor, BNBI appointed an 11-person search committee chaired by Dr. Malin Young, Associate Laboratory Director of Earth and Biological Sciences at the Pacific Northwest Laboratory and BNBI Board of Director member. The committee is charged with identifying a diverse pool of strategic scientific leaders with proven track records that include impactful research and the successful delivery of large projects; a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion; and the qualities necessary to inspire talented professionals across the laboratory to their greatest impact. The committee will provide a list of candidates to the BNBI Board of Directors who will work in consultation with both the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to make the final candidate decision.

NBACC’s greatest asset is its dedicated staff. We are searching for a candidate who respects all facets of the laboratory structure and staff, supports the robust work ethic amongst staff to uphold the integrity of our work and empower accountability across all levels, inspires through effective communication, promotes innovation and continual learning for all, and protects and supports the strong safety, security, and quality compliance culture at NBACC for which we are recognized throughout the scientific community.

The search committee is committed to identifying an internationally recognized science and technology leader who will inspire and engage NBACC and its regional, national, and international partners with a compelling vision for the future.
