The Battelle National Biodefense Institute (BNBI) contributed $6,000 to Frederick County Community College’s (FCC) STEM Scholarship program for the academic school year 2021-2022. This is a regular donation from BNBI in support of two students, each school year, who demonstrate exemplary aptitude in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. BNBI has made donations to FCC’s STEM Program since 2019 totaling over $18,000 supporting the studies of current college students to help defray the cost of education.

On February 19, 2021, NBACC/BNBI celebrated 3000 days of continuous operations. It is a one-of-a-kind facility that has remained online and fully functional 24/7/365 since it became operational in 2012. DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas recognized the momentous occasion with a letter of congratulations to the facility.

On November 19, 2020, NBACC employees were honored with the 2020 Undersecretary’s Special Achievement Award for their contributions to the critical COVID-19 response efforts.

In May 2020, the 12th Annual FITCI/Fort Detrick Alliance Technology Showcase selected NBACC as its Innovator of the Year . The Innovator of the Year award, given to a company that has demonstrated exceptional advancements in STEM, was awarded to National Biodefense Analysis and Countermeasures Center (NBACC) for the work it is doing to evaluate the impact of conditions such as humidity and temperature on COVID-19’s survivability in the air, on surfaces, and in respiratory fluids. ‘This year our committee that selects the award recipient wanted to honor an organization that has been instrumental in research and innovation related to COVID-19. The results of NBACC’s research is assisting in protecting first responders and healthcare workers on the front lines of the pandemic, as well as providing individuals with ways to reduce contamination.”

BNBI was selected as one of Frederick’s Top 50 businesses for 2018. Frederick’s Top 50 is a partnership between The Frederick County Office of Economic Development (OED) and Frederick Magazine that highlights the 50 companies in Frederick County that have the largest potential to contribute to the county’s vibrant economy.

BNBI was selected as Frederick County’s best place to work in the large employer category (companies with 51-200 employees). The Best Places to Work Award is sponsored by the Frederick County Business Development and Retention Department; the City of Frederick Department of Economic Development; Frederick County Workforce Services; and the Frederick County Chamber of Commerce. The criteria for selection included a broad base of measurable objectives that are assigned points and evaluated on a weighted scoring system. The finalists were scored on recruitment and retention; compensation, benefits and amenities; professional development; work/life balance; and community and social responsibility.

BNBI was one of fifteen Frederick businesses honored for their leadership, expansion and job creation by the Frederick County Department of Business & Retention reception. BNBI was specifically recognized for job creation.

The Patriot Award is in recognition of BNBI’s support of our employees who are also Reservists and Guardsmen. BNBI is committed to backing our Citizen Warriors colleagues who are a key component of our strong national security.

Nominated by Frederick County Public Schools, BNBI won the Frederick County Chamber of Commerce’s Live Here! Work Here! Benchmark Award for our STEM education program as well as our outstanding commitment to the quality of education in the greater Frederick community.
