The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC)

NBACC is dedicated to excellence in research. The use of animals in research at the NBACC is closely scrutinized and animals are only used when non-animal alternatives (e.g., in vitro systems, computer modeling) are unable to provide the necessary scientific information. One of the pillars of this pursuit is the humane care and use of animals in NBACC research. Whenever animals are used or planned to be used in research projects conducted or sponsored by NBACC, the projects will be guided by and subject to the following standards and principles:
The Laboratory Animal Welfare Act of 1966 (7USC 2131, et seq.), as amended, and implementing regulations promulgated by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) (9 CFR 1-4)
Public Health Service Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare, 2015 (PHS Policy)
Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, National Research Council, 2011 (Guide)
Care and Use of Animals in Research, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Management Directive (MD) 026-01
The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) is responsible for the oversight and evaluation of the Institution’s animal care and use program. NBACC is fully committed to establishing and maintaining a culture of care and compassion that is inherent in all aspects of the care and use of research animals. NBACC is dedicated to ensuring the welfare of the animals used in its research programs and applying best practices in animal care and use as well as striving to exceed industry standards.
