Simulated sunlight inactivates the coronavirus on surfaces

Simulated sunlight rapidly inactivates the novel coronavirus on non-porous surfaces like stainless steel, according to researchers from the Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology Directorate’s National Biodefense Analysis and Countermeasures Center (NBACC). “These results suggest that natural sunlight may be effective for significantly reducing the amount of virus on exposed surfaces, such as mailboxes, playground equipment, and shopping carts left outdoors in the sunlight,” a spokesman for the researchers told Reuters.

DHS Initiating Crucial Research to Mitigate COVID-19

March 25, 2020/in corporate/by webmaster

Washington, DC| Wednesday | March 25, 2020

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate (S&T) is conducting ongoing research that will help scientists better understand the coronavirus that causes the disease known as COVID-19, and methods to prevent its spread. In the Trump Administration’s whole of government effort, this work is being done at the National Biodefense Analysis and Countermeasures Center (NBACC) laboratory in cooperation with the DHS Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction Office.

Challenging the Glo-Germ Technique for Aerosol Containment During Cell Sorting

July 25, 2019/in corporate, Operations/by webmaster

Frederick, MD | Wednesday | July 25, 2019

The containment of high-pressured biological sample streams generated by flow cytometer cell sorters is biologically imperative; the risk of exposure to (potentially) infectious agents must be mitigated. Subsequently, evaluating levels of aerosol containment are imperative for biosafety assurance.

A team of researchers from the National Biodefense Analysis and Countermeasures Center (NBACC) have developed a robust assay to determine cell sorter aerosol containment…

Surprising Research Funded by the National Science Foundation, Which May lose $1 Billion

March 13, 2019/in corporate/by webmaster

Frederick, MD | Wednesday | March 13, 2019

Protecting the U.S. from bioterrorism
The Department of Homeland Security isn’t widely known for its research, but it actually has its own national lab: the National Biodefense Analysis and Countermeasures Center. Armed with biohazard suits and clean rooms, federally funded scientists in Maryland are tasked with figuring out which bacteria and viruses might pose a threat to this country—and figuring out how to combat them. NBACC does everything from inventing new vaccines to planning responses to potential bioterror events. In the event of an airborne viral attack, you’ll know who to thank.
