Severe Hepatitis Outbreak Linked to Common Childhood Viruses

San Francisco, CA | Thursday | March 30, 2023 A new UC San Francisco-led study brings scientists closer to understanding the causes of a mysterious rash of cases of acute severe hepatitis that began appearing in otherwise healthy children after COVID-19 lockdowns eased in the United States and 34 other countries in the spring of 2022.

Battelle National Biodefense Institute announces $34,000 in grants for STEM teachers

Frederick, MD | Friday | March 24, 2023 Frederick County Public Schools (FCPS) in Maryland recently announced the recipients of a package of mini-grants for science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) from the Battelle National Biodefense Institute (BNBI). The mini-grants, worth a total of $34,000, were directed to individual teachers to fund their classroom efforts. The funding is also the latest in a longtime partnership between the school district and BNBI.

Cardin, Van Hollen, Trone Seek to Solidify Fort Detrick-based Biodefense Lab as One-of-a-Kind National Asset

Washington, DC| Friday | December 02, 2022 U.S. Senators Ben Cardin and Chris Van Hollen and Congressman David Trone (all D-Md.) have introduced legislation to authorize the continuing operations of the National Biodefense Analysis and Countermeasures Center (NBACC) at Fort Detrick, Md. First established in 2004, this one-of-a-kind laboratory supports both the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Federal Bureau of Investigation, as well as numerous other federal agencies and partners. The NBACC “has played a key role in America’s response to the Nation’s most difficult public health and biodefense challenges,” according to DHS, including the 2014 response to Ebola and the recent COVID-19 pandemic.

County Schools Awarded $50K in Grants to Support STEM Projects

Frederick County Public Schools on Tuesday announced a series of grants totaling $50,000 to fund science, technology, engineering and math projects at eight schools.

The money came from the Battelle National Biodefense Institute, which manages Fort Detrick’s National Biodefense Analysis and Countermeasures Center, and awards annual grants to FCPS teachers.

Homeland Security Bill Includes Millions for Fort Detrick Lab That Faced Closure

Homeland security funding that will soon be up for a vote in Congress includes $73.6 million for a Fort Detrick laboratory that researches biological threats and processes evidence for the FBI, but was in danger of being closed.

Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D) announced Thursday he secured millions in federal funding for the National Biodefense Analysis Countermeasures Center at Fort Detrick, among other state programs, in the proposed Fiscal 2019 Homeland Security Appropriations Act.
